149440_4031211464916_2007714544_nIt marked the end of an era when we had to put the family dog to sleep this month.

I can remember when we brought Hershey home during my senior year of high school. Who doesn’t love a Labrador puppy? I took him to a freshman football game at Toms River North and the little guy kept falling asleep. Had to carry him and his leash around most of the time.

Like I said, who doesn’t love a Labrador puppy?

I left for college the next fall, and over the next 12 years, Hershey was a fixture of my visits home. Whether I was back for the summer from TCNJ, stopping home for a night to do laundry, or later, visiting on a trip from California, Hershey was always there.

He’d bark at the door, sure, but we all knew he was a softy at heart. All he ever really wanted was a good belly rub. Someone to share the couch with. A pizza crust if he was lucky.

It’ll certainly be different on my next visit home — but we’ll always look back fondly on the Hershey years.

When I first got the news of his passing, I immediately took to Facebook and started scrolling through years of photos. Two things:

  1. I hadn’t done that in a long time. It’s crazy that you can take a trip down memory lane with just a few flicks of the screen on your smart phone.
  2. Facebook is never going away, for this or any other reasons.

I had forgotten about the Hershey Beal profile I created back in college. (You know, that fake profile you create when you think you’re too cool to be Facebook friends with family members.) But it turned out pretty handy when it came time to reflect on the Hershey years.

Looking back through his profile, here’s a collection of my favorite photos:
